Thermophysical properties of molten mixture of316L stainless steel (SS316L) and control-rod material(B_4C) are necessary for the development of computersimulation codes that describe core degradationmechanisms during severe accidents in nuclear powerplants involving sodium-cooled fast reactors. The effect ofB_4C addition to SS316L on the solidus and liquidustemperatures were first measured by differential scanningcalorimetry. An electromagnetic levitation techniqueperformed in a static magnetic field was used to measurethe density, surface tension, normal spectral emissivity,specific heat capacity, and thermal conductivity of moltenSS316L and SS316L containing B_4C. The effects of B_4Caddition to SS316L on the thermophysical properties werestudied up to 10 mass% of B_4C.
