The City of Tampa (city) has recently utilized trenchless technology to rehabilitate 1,700 linear feet of an existing 8-inch cast iron potable water main within their distribution system. This section of the system had experienced several recent failures resulting in significant social and economic impact as consequences of the main being located under the heavily travelled Courtney Campbell Causeway (designated an official scenic highway by the State of Florida, with an average annual daily traffic count of 75,000 vehicles) and it being a dead-end feed to several businesses along the Causeway. Given these conditions and desiring reduction in the social, environmental and economic impact of replacing the existing water main, the city elected to implement pipe bursting. The primary driver of selecting pipe bursting was that it would save significant impact to motorists as a result of the greatly reduced number and lengths of excavations requiring road closures.This technical paper will illustrate the step-by-step process of implementing pipe bursting on the City of Tampa's project and provide details of the daily construction activities implemented to help ensure successful construction of the pipe bursting project. The greatest factor for constraint on this project was the limited time period allowable for road closures which required careful planning and implementation by the experienced crew. However, as with every construction project, changes occur, and it was necessary for the crew to maintain flexibility with an attention to the overall project goals to overcome construction problems. Actual case study project information will be analyzed in detail to illustrate the steps of the static pipe bursting project and identify strengths of pipe bursting. Additional focus will be provided on achieving soil compaction required on the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) roadway.
