Developing technologies are revolutionizing the way information is being collected, aggregated and used in our industry. With the Pipeline Safety Zero Incident initiative as an industry we are committed to making safety our number one priority. This presentation will discuss using LiDAR (Light Distancing and Ranging) and other technologies, to capture facility data to develop enterprise data management solutions while drastically reduce your risk.A key tool in being able to meet these regulations has been for operators to establish and use Geographic Information Systems (GIS). GIS has been proven to be highly effective on complex networks in many industries. Facility Managers call these same sort of data sets Building Information Models (BIM) where they map out the structural, mechanical, and electrical assets of a building or complex facility. GIS and BIM gives operators a highly accessible library of information on their systems that has a logical and easily understood interface. The use of LiDAR can help provide an avenue for developing BIM, GIS and MOC (Management of Change) solutions.The demands to shift into fully utilizing GIS and BIM can be met with several present and emerging technologies. Aerial LiDAR, photogrammetry, terrestrial LiDAR, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)/drones and mobile LiDAR, and remote monitoring are all methods to cost effectively and safely acquire mountains of high quality, accurate and precise data. Once the data is acquired, 3D modeling, printing and GIS/BIM integration can help operations maintain and manage their records to meet this seemingly ever increasing regulatory requirements.
