When developing a relaying algorithm, digital filtering is animportant step. A method to design a FIR filter based upon twoobjectives is given. These objectives are to allow easy computation andto be as close as possible to a given frequency response. With the helpof an example, an original method is also proposed to evaluate thecomplete sequence of a digital relaying algorithm, based on FIRfiltering. It is shown how such an algorithm can be used, not only forprotection but also for each function of an integrated protection andcontrol system
