A mathematical model has been developed for predicting theperformance of rotating arcs in SF6 gas by considering theenergy balance and force balance equations. The finite differencetechnique has been adopted for the computer simulation of the arccharacteristics. This method helps in considering the spatial variationof the transport and radiative properties of the arc. All the three heatloss mechanisms have been considered: conduction, convection, andradiation. Results obtained over a 10 mS (half cycle of 50 Hz wave)current flow period for 1.4 kA (peak) and 4.2 kA (peak) show that theproposed arc model gives the expected behavior of the arc over the rangeof currents studied. This arc model is proposed to be adopted for thecomputer aided design of rotating arc switchgear
