Intelligent systems (IS) technologies have received much attentionin a wide range of process engineering applications including processoperations. Rapid change in applying the latest technologies has becomea serious challenge to both management and technical teams. Objects andcomponents are changing the way we relate to our computer and networksand most feel the rate of change will continue to increase. Allinformation technology systems have data and communications tools forpersonnel. The industrial desktop can be adapted to automate decisions,to intelligently analyze large amounts of data, and to learn from pastexperiences whether from operators, engineers or managers. They canadapt their desktop according to their domain knowledge, roles, skillsand responsibilities. Collaboration between functions (operations,management, maintenance, and engineering) is enhanced. Access to dataand analysis tools enables plant personnel to try new ideas, determineand track the right targets, determine and track the best patterns, andtransform and store data and knowledge. The paper presents a descriptionof the data hierarchy and analysis means needed to improve processoperations. Continuous improvement with an innovation loop fueled bydata collection and analysis methods emerges as the best method foractive decision-making and collaboration. A sampling of results includeextending sub-critical equipment availability, increased production byfaster detection of process bottlenecks and operating cost reduction.Descriptions of these applications are presented
