In this paper we describe a new method for encoding data streamson system buses in order to reduce bus line transition activity. Ourfocus is on data streams whose statistical parameters such as transitionactivity are nonstationary or a priori unknown. Our method is based onthe Partial Businvert Encoding method which is extended with a dynamicselection of the bus lines to be encoded. We present the theoreticalbasics and an efficient implementation of a corresponding coder-decodersystem. Experimental results showed a reduction in transition activityof up to 42% compared to the uncoded data stream and a reduction inpower dissipation of up to 52.5% compared to the best published encodingscheme working without a priori knowledge about the data streamcharacteristics
