The authors investigated the fluid motion in L-shaped geometriesusing a laser Doppler anemometer (LDA), particle image velocimetry(PIV), and computational techniques, in order to reveal details on thestructure and stability of the trapped eddy system. The aim was tosimulate the flows measured with the LDA and PIV and to assess theaccuracy of the mathematical models used. The nonintrusive opticalmeasurements of the fluid motion in joined rectangular grooves werenumerically predicted using two models of turbulence. The structure ofthe vortex system within the geometries was determined, and itsdependence on the aspect ratios of the groove was established. Theperformance of the turbulence models in simulating these complex flowsis assessed
