A generic modelling technique for the stochastic analysis ofC3I systems

A method is described for representing stochastically thebehaviour of a C3I system for the purposes of analysing itsoperational effectiveness. The principles of the modelling technique areexplained in which a state space is constructed from discrete andcontinuous variables, and transitions between states are specified. Thiscaptures the discrete nature of events such as detections, decisions andmessage transfer within the C3I system, as well as thecontinuous nature of entity location and movement within the physicalenvironment. By suitably designing the state space, Measures ofeffectiveness appropriate to the problem of interest may be derived fromthe solution to the problem expressed as probability distributions overthe state space. The principles upon which the method is based areexplained and the method formulated mathematically for a number ofexamples arising from surveillance and command and control by way ofdemonstration
