An intelligent system developed at the Technical University ofBerlin (Germany) for assisting in the design of cost-effective thermalpower plants using heuristic rules and fuzzy approaches is described andapplied to a simple plant. This intelligent system applies an iterativeoptimization technique that is based on assigning costs to the realthermodynamic value of an energy carrier and on the evaluation ofperformance parameters that reflect the cost importance of the realthermodynamic inefficiencies. Knowledge about identifying design errorsis modelled by heuristic rules whereas the modification of decisionvariables is based on the application of fuzzy approaches. Recentdevelopments in the use of intelligent systems for process synthesis andimprovement are reviewed
