A pragmatic design philosophy for variable speed motor drives thatseeks to satisfy all the desirable goals of the designer based on amultiobjective (vector) optimization formulation is presented.Pareto-optimal (noninferior) solutions are found from which the best ischosen based on the designer's preferences. The design of a current-fedsurface-mounted permanent-magnet motor for variable speed application inwhich the efficiency is maximized and the material and production costis simultaneously minimized is used to demonstrate the advantages andusefulness of this design approach over most of the existing electricmotor design techniques
