The future telecommunication networks are expected to support awide variety of multimedia services with very different bit-rate andperformance requirements. Under these circumstances, it has beenrecognized that the conventional simple source modeling, namely, thePoisson arrival process, is no longer adequate to describe various kindsof traffic sources accurately. Other source modelings, which give moreaccurate results but greatly complicate the performance analyses, havebeen proposed. However, all these models share a common property, thatis, they can be decomposed into a superposition of independent identicalinterrupted Poisson processes (IPP). In order to obtain a balancebetween the accuracy and the complexity of analysis, the authors proposeto approximate an IPP, a basic component of various models, by a Poissondistribution and use the Chen-Stein (1975, 1972) method to find an upperbound of this approximation error
