Conventional allocation of network resources for connectionmanagement is by and large static. For each performance parameter thatis negotiated during a call setup, its agreed value must be maintainedthroughout the duration of the call. Due to a dynamic networkingenvironment, the result of quality of service (QOS) negotiation duringcall establishment may not remain ideal throughout the duration of acall. The authors propose a method for managing connections, in aconnection-oriented integrated communication network, to maintainacceptable QOS for the entire duration of each connection, to make QOSimprovements whenever possible, to recover from connection failures andcall preemption, as well as to partially retrieve allocated resources torelieve network overload
