A study of the economics, operations and applications of SONETself-healing ring architectures

The economics, operations, and applications of synchronous opticalnetwork (SONET) unidirectional and bidirectional self-healing ringarchitectures are studied in order to ascertain whether the use of thetwo different types of ring architecture for SONET networks isadvisable, both from an economic and operations viewpoint. It is shownthat there are economic advantages to using both types of rings in asingle network. From an operations perspective, the study shows thateach ring type affects operations, although the bidirectionalself-healing ring is more consistent with today's point-to-pointmethodology
