Internet technology holds many promises for enterpriseintegration. Examples include intranets and extranets. However, theseapplications require sound planning to really tap into the uniquepromises and add value to the enterprise. The heavy machinery industrypresents a good case in point. Static pages do not facilitate amanufacturer's problems in its core productions and business functions.Instead, a web-based information system (WIS) that connects web clientcapabilities to enterprise databases and thereby enhances businessprocesses is needed. The planning of web-based information systems needsa proactive review of the capabilities of the Internet technology toserve the particular needs of the firm and its customers.
