An overview of the future role of fiber optics in improving theEMC (electromagnetic compatibility) characteristics of shipboardradioelectronic equipment is presented. It is emphasized that theoptical fiber will become the dominant carrier for shipboard interiorcommunications. Some practical applications of optical fiber arepresented. It is noted that the development of new fibers withtheoretical loss values of less than 0.001 dB is an important area whererapid progress is being made
