Abstract: A diffraction grating technology based uponvolume-phase holograms shows promise of enhancedperformance for many applications in astronomicalspectroscopy over classical surface-relief gratingtechnology. We present a discussion of the underlyingphysics of a volume-phase grating, give sometheoretical performance characteristics, presentperformance data for a real volume-phase grating, anddiscuss some potential applications for this gratingtechnology. !24
