Abstract: We show how to resolve the autocorrelation of wavefront- sensor measurements as they are commonly taken by adaptive- optics systems into terms due to individual atmospheric layers. We exploit this factorization to measure the strength and wind speed of each turbulent layer.We show that the Kolmogorov theory provides a good description of the data and find values of Fried's parameter, r$-0$/, that are in good agreement with other measurements. Finally, a quantitative estimate of the validity of Taylor's frozen flow hypothesis is obtained. !10
