This paper presents a new control method to ensure effective reactive power sharing in islanded microgrids with multiple distributed generator units (DG units) under mismatched feeder line conditions. A detailed mathematical model of primary and secondary control levels of a hierarchical control are designed to ensure accurate active and reactive power sharing across all DG units. A new communication topology is associated with the proposed control to enhance the rate of convergence while considering the cost of the communication topology. This topology takes the extensibility and scalability of the microgrid in consideration to advantage this proposed topology for any future microgrid extensions. A configuration of six DG units with different feeder lines is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink to validate the proposed control method and examine the influence of the proposed communication topology on performance.
