Estimation of Dissipation Factor by Applying Cross-Correlation Method

This paper presents a modification of the crosscorrelation method for phase shift measurement for the purpose of dissipation factor estimation. Proposed method does not imply the necessity of usage of various filtering methods, however, requires the applying of reference signal. Proposed processing of sine curves with noise components implies separate calculation of inner product of analyzed signals with the reference sine signal for the purpose of their initial phase estimation. Paper also contains illustration and analysis of the influence of normally distributed noise on the accuracy of cross-correlation function estimation for various durations of analyzed signals. Main sources of inaccuracy that lead to bias in estimated value of dissipation factor are also listed and discussed. The results of comparative analysis of accuracy of phase shift and dissipation factor estimation, based on simulations made for generated model signals by means of applying the proposed modification of the cross-correlation method and the conventional crosscorrelation method, are also given.
