Lightning is one of the main reasons for high voltage transmission line outages and represents an important problem for the insulation design of power systems. In-depth research on the lightning overvoltage performance of the transmission line is necessary. This paper describes a case study carried out on a 400 kV AC double circuit transmission line between Ashuganj and Bhulta of Bangladesh power system network. The main focus is on analyzing the effect of lightning strikes on the selected transmission line. The effects of lightning surge on cross-arm voltage in nearby towers of the lightning strike; lightning surge current magnitude on cross-arm voltage; tower footing resistance on cross-arm voltage are also discussed. All modeling and simulations are done using the PSCAD-EMTP software tool.
