A Systematic Tuning Approach for Multi-Band Power System Stabilizers (PSS4B)

This paper proposes a systematic approach for tuning multi-band power system stabilizer (MB-PSS) or IEEE-PSS4B. The design of MB-PSS provides adequate damping over a wide range (0.01Hz to 4 Hz) of rotor mode frequencies. It uses three separate compensator blocks for low frequencies (0.01Hz to 0.1 Hz), intermediate frequencies (0.1Hz to 0.8 Hz) and high frequencies (0.8Hz to 4 Hz). Electrical power and speed are used as inputs to the MB-PSS. Conventional speed and power input stabilizers use strong system with the full loading as tuning condition to achieve adequate damping over wide range of frequencies. This paper explores the effectiveness of using conventional tuning guidelines for MB-PSS in a single machine infinite bus test system.
