Implementation of Remedial Action Scheme for Transient Stability Index Improvement of Power System Island

As generation mixes change, modern power system is more likely to operate near its secure limit. As a result, there is a need to put measures in place to improve transient stability to be able to mitigate the effect of overstressing the power system infrastructure. Also, power grid islanding is employed to prevent cascading outages when a severe contingency occur in the power system. Controlled islanding scheme can also be implemented to curtail the wide spread impact of cyber attack on the power grid. In this paper, we demonstrate the deployment of remedial action schemes (RAS) to improve the transient stability index of the power system broken into islands as a result of cyber attack. The implemented RAS scheme is aimed at improving the resilience of the island in such a way that such island is able to operate independently. We modeled the RAS scheme using user-defined models (UDM) and implemented it in Transient Stability Assessment Tool (TSAT). WECC 179-bus test system was used for the simulation.
