Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) symbology for assisting ground-referenced operations was invented and evaluated by pilot-in-the-loop simulation. In operations with an HMD, flight instrument data can be read regardless of the pilot's line-of-sight, but conformal symbols such as the flight path vector and artificial horizon might go outside the field of view (FOV) when the pilot has to pay attention to ground features. In this research, we designed an HMD symbol called the Ground Path Vector (GPV) that assists pilot tracking of ground features and undulating terrain while paying attention to flight instrument data, and evaluated its performance in pilot-in-the-loop simulations. It was found that the GPV improved tracking task performance while not performance of keeping altitude and speed.
