Reduced rare-earth permanent magnet machine is an appealing research topic recently due to several challenging issues of rare-earth magnets. This paper proposes a new consequent pole toroidal winding dual rotor permanent magnet synchronous machine with reduced rare-earth volume. First, topology comparison and principle of operation are discussed. Electromagnetic design and procedure of proposed consequent pole toroidal winding dual rotor permanent magnet synchronous machine is illustrated. In order to maximize average torque capability and reduce torque ripple, various key design parameters on average torque, cogging torque, and on-load torque ripple are investigated. Finally, a comparative analysis of electromagnetic performance characteristics between proposed and conventional dual rotor permanent magnet machine are presented. The torque/magnet mass ratio enhances from 38Nm/kg to 70.3Nm/kg, which shows the utilization of rare-earth magnets improved significantly.
