Outage Probability Analysis to Address Interference Vulnerabilities in Digital Mobile Radio Networks

This paper presents a general framework to evaluate the outage probability in Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) networks. First, an analysis of potential attacks and vulnerabilities that present significant threats on DMR networks is completed; using an attack tree, the impact of jamming, denial of service, and replay attacks is described. For jamming attacks, the effective jamming to signal ratio is calculated for a realistic DMR deployment scenario. Then, a radio frequency interference model is developed in a Rayleigh fading channel model where interferers are distributed according to a Poisson point process. The model considers in-band interference due to co-channel interference and interference due to spectral leakage from adjacent channels. The stochastic interference model is suited for site-specific scenarios and can serve to estimate the outage prediction analysis under a variety of site parameters such as size, density, noise power, and pathloss. It is shown that uncomplicated intentional and unintentional radio frequency interference can combine to disrupt the service to the DMR system.
