Exterior noise reduction results following PTAC and window replacement for hotel rooms.

A modernization project for a hotel within 200 feet of commuter and freight train tracks included measures to reduce the sound of diesel locomotives and train horns for guestrooms facing the tracks by replacing the PTAC with a ducted fan coil unit. Measurements were taken of the existing conditions for the interior and exterior condition to document the noise reduction provided by the PTAC, concrete walls and double windows of the building facade. A mock-up of the fan coil unit configuration was also tested, which did not fully achieve the desired goals, and detailed recommendations were developed for new windows to further improve the acoustical isolation. After recommendations were fully implemented, Wilson Ihrig returned in 2018 to conduct follow-up interior and exterior measurements. This presentation will compare these measured results with the predictions and provide a summary of the analysis process.
