The National Academies have identified gaps in safety assurance both for very near-term civil aviation vehicles and also for future autonomous aerospace vehicles. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has created the System-Wide Safety (SWS) project within the Airspace Operations and Safety Program (AOSP) to address some of those gaps. In this paper, we will discuss the identified needs for validation and verification both for traditional aviation as well as emerging markets. We will highlight some of the recent progress towards addressing those gaps, as well as outline our plan for the next few years.
