As connected technologies and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) make their way into the petrochemical industry, a path has been opened for data to play a very important role in monitoring electrical infrastructure to make informed and timely decisions. Many details must be considered to implement a digitally connected substation: communication infrastructure, networking design, smart-connected devices, and real-time in-premise monitoring. This same data and sensor information can also be used in other areas like predictive equipment health monitoring.This paper explores the design, considerations, issues, and implementation of connecting three levels of electrical technology at a chemical plant to leverage the use of available data for advanced analytics.
