Stress Control on RTV Coated Porcelain Disc Insulator using BaTiO3 Nano-composites in Presence of Dry bands

Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber coatings are deployed on surface of the porcelain insulators owing to its superior pollution performance. However, due to loss of hydrophobicity of silicone rubber coatings either due to corona discharge, or under extreme wet conditions, flow of surface leakage current increases which eventually trigger the formation of dry-bands on the insulator surface. In the long run, these dry bands result in increment of electric field on insulator surface. Hence, in this contribution, RTV silicone rubber mixed with BaTiO3 nano-composite with varying different volume percentages and Aspect Ratios (A.R) have been used to reduce electric field on coated insulator surface in the presence of dry bands. Investigations reveal that mixing BaTiO3 nano-composite with RTV silicone rubber leads to a considerable reduction in electric stress, as compared to using mere RTV silicone rubber coatings.
