Experimental Flight Testing of Prototype Control Law Designs at the USAF Test Pilot School

An overview is provided of prototype control law flight testing at the USAF Test Pilot School. The facilities available for use in testing as well as examples of previously tested projects are discussed. A buildup process that is used by the USAF Test Pilot School to flight test new control laws that have never been flown by a pilot is outlined. The the process for applying to have a prototype control law tested is outlined as well. This capability is unique to the USAF Test Pilot School primarily due to the Variable Stability Aircraft that are operated at the USAF Test Pilot School. USAF Test Pilot School is able to rapidly test candidate flight control software on manned platforms in a safe manner while bypassing most of the traditional verification and validation testing used on typical manned programs. This paper serves as an introductory session for a series of papers that provide detailed examples of control law testing done at the USAF Test Pilot School.
