Multi-function and unification are significant properties for the fifth generation radar, which has been widely accepted in the industry. As one of implementation ways, detection-communication unification completes both functions with platform multiplexed, information sharing and task fusion in one radar. Thus higher efficiency would be obtained in utilization of electromagnetic spectrum resource and electronic information facility, and thus the overall effectiveness would be enhanced for the equipment platform. For the purposes of mobility and stability, it is in urgent demand to integrate detection and communication in ground-based radar. In this paper, application of detection-communication unification technology for ground-based radar is explored. The research topics include its realization means, design of framework and working mode, as well as the estimation method of its effect on radar performance. More consideration is taken into a bi-static radar application of detection communication unification.
