The Adjustment Method and Effect of Reactive Power Control Strategy for LCC-HVDC with Variable Power

Large scale of new energy power can be transmitted to remote load center by LCC-HVDC. Because of the frequent fluctuation of new energy power, the shunt filter/capacitor and transformer tap may be adjusted frequently based on the traditional control strategy, which may affect the device safety and reliability. The reactive power of convertor needs to be controlled smoothly. The paper proposes the new method of adjusting trigger angle to smooth out the reactive power. The active power series data is divided into several sections with different maximum active power, and then the trigger angle is adjusted in each section to keep the reactive power constant relatively. The simulation result shows that the new method can control the reactive power smoothly, and the adjustment times of shunt filter/capacitor and transformer tap are reduced greatly. The new method may have great potential to use for large scale of new energy power transmission by HVDC with variable power.
