This paper presents a transmission scheme and the hardware implementation in the Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS) band as a long range and low-power alternative solution for the Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) Internet of Things (IoT) applications. As the first demonstration of the MURS band LPWAN, the proposed transmission scheme offers an agile narrowband modulation with adjustable data rates for various adaptive modulation IoT scenarios. Additionally, by leveraging a low power system architecture design combined with the low loss propagation characteristics of the MURS band at VHF, the proposed communication approach offers very long coverage ranges. The overall communication approach enables an adjustable data rate of 5-384 kbps with coverage ranges of tens of kilometres, which makes the MURS band a very suitable solution for LPWAN applications. The hardware implementation of the proposed transmission method is also presented, demonstrating an order of magnitude improvement in RF circuit power consumption over the existing commercially available LPWAN solutions.
