This paper focusses on the challenges posed by numerical simulations for the design of power magnetic components, like inductors and transformers. Following the physical constraints and laws which dictate the operation of magnetic components, the simulation goals and assumptions are highlighted. State-of-art simulation approaches for the design of magnetics are presented, whereas selected methods are illustrated and discussed for the determination of the inductance curve, losses, voltage stress, temperature rise and the acoustic emission.
