A simple and effective rotor initial position detection method for permanent magnet (PM) machines is proposed. It is based on saturation effect which is commonly used by existing methods. But different from conventional methods utilizing phase current or phase voltage sensors, only the DC-link voltage sensor is used to estimate the rotor initial position. With the aid of an external resistor, under the same saturation level the propose method can provide a better estimation performance on surface-mounted PM machines including brushless AC (BLAC) and brushless DC (BLDC). Furthermore, the proposed method can achieve a 30 degree estimation resolution. Experimental results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
