The starter retractor has two main functions. At the time of starting the internal combustion engine, the gear connected to the starter shaft is brought to the gear ring of the flywheel, and when the engine starts, returns to the starting position. A retractor relay starter is arranged on the principle of a standard electromagnet. It consists of two windings (retractor and retaining), starter and core connection circuit with a return spring. The outer end of the armature is connected with a lever-operated plug. Fixed on the axis in the central part of the plug opposite from the end of the retracting relay, the Bendix moves when the electromagnet actuates, which retracts the core. The relay may differ in size, performance, maintainability, but from model to model, its principle of operation and structure practically do not change. The starter is not designed for constant interaction with the engine of the car, its task is only a short-term start-up process. The relay is responsible for the supply and removal of the starter gear, which spins the engine flywheel. Thus, the retractor relay is an important component of the startup system of an internal combustion engine, its normal operation ensures successful engine start, and with a broken relay, it is either difficult or impossible to start the engine.
