This paper describes a real system for an automatic DC-motor speed control to exemplify a secondary identification method that considerably improves the identification accuracy. The goal of optimizational (secondary) identification is to find the optimal values of structural transient parameters so as to minimize the objective-function values, whereby the ranges of changing the structural parameters as well as their quantization steps are found from the primary identification results. The secondary identification enables the user to find the extent, to which the obtained structural-parameter values deviate from the nominal values. The paper proposes a resonance method for system diagnosis. If the number of unknown variables exceeds the number of resonant frequencies, it is necessary to use the test connection method to diagnose the system status. After multiple solutions are obtained, choose one of them. The heuristic analysis of the obtained solutions leads to a conclusion on the structural parameters and their values.
