ATC-62 Advanced Seismic Analysis Methods Expanding Modeling to Include Nonlinear Degrading Response

Deviation between nonlinear static and nonlinear response history analyses can be attributed to a number of factors including: (1) inaccuracies in the "equal displacement rule" in the short period range; (2) cyclic and in-cycle strength and stiffness degradation; (3) dynamic P-A effects and instability; (4) multi-degree of freedom effects; (5) static load vector assumptions; and (6) soil-structure interaction effects. This paper presents the ongoing work of the FEMA funded Applied Technology Council ATC-62 project, which was commissioned to further investigate a number of these factors, including component and global cyclic and in-cycle degradation of strength and stiffness. It summarizes the results of focused parametric studies investigating the effects of degradation on overall structural response, and provides recommendations on how this information can be used to improve nonlinear static and nonlinear dynamic analyses.
