Base Isolation restricts the transfer of ground motion to a large extent and thereby reducing strength and ductility demand on the superstructure. This results in lower dependence on post-yield behaviour. Variation in damping of bearings can further control the magnitude of earthquake forces transferred to the superstructure. In the present paper, an effort has been made to study the effect of variation in damping of bearings on response of a Base Isolated four storey RC frame against earthquake forces. Damping in bearings is varied from 10% to 30% and response of the structure is compared in terms of Period Shift, Base Shear, Storey Drift and Acceleration-Response with an equivalent Fixed Base frame. Analysis of these frames is carried out with STAAD.Pro 2005. The response of Base Isolated frames has shown a significant reduction in various parameters as compared with Fixed Base frame. It is found that rate of response reduction is high up to 20% damping in bearing.
