SEAOC's 'Recommended Guidelines for the Practice of Structural Engineering in California' 2020 and Future Editions

SEAOC has updated its Recommended Guidelines for the Practice of Structural Engineering in California which was last updated in 1999. The Guidelines provide guidance to our members on professional conduct, scope of services, selection of structural engineers by clients, peer reviews, as well as expert witness and forensic engineering services. The Guidelines provide the practicing engineer with tools that can help them achieve project success, reduce liability, and be profitable. This paper reviews and provides guidance on the provisions in the current edition with emphasis on the updated provisions. Provisions have been added to help define scope of work for sustainability and BIM services. It was also recognized that small projects have unique and special challenges. SEAOC has made a commitment to regularly updating the Guidelines. The Professional Practice Committee is considering addressing engineering practice issues related to tsunami and flood loading the next edition of the Guidelines. Also. the Committee is considering providing recommendations for the expected minimum scope of work for the geotechnical engineer because a significant portion of the structural engineer's work can be dependent on the geotechnical engineers recommendations.
