Laboratory Evaluation of Properties of Modified Asphalt Binders with High Content Polymer and Softening Agent

ABSTRACT. The objective of the study is to evaluate the impact of the combination of high content polymer and softening agent on the properties of modified binders. To achieve the objective, a base binder of neat PG 52-28, styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), ground tire rubber (GTR), and two softening agents (SA) (bio-based oil and aromatic oil) were used to produce modified binders. High temperature, viscoelastic rheological, and low temperature cracking properties were investigated by Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR), frequency sweep, standard Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) and BBR strength tests. The testing results indicate that the combination of high content polymer and softening agent significantly improved low temperature cracking resistance as well as high temperature properties.
