Eureka! There is Mica in Them Thar Hills! Understanding Complex Site Geology and the Impacts on Embankment Construction

Although the construction specifications for fill placement required industry-standard quality control procedures, the variable site geology and micaceous soils initially made it difficult for the contractor to achieve the performance requirements. By coordinating with the contractor, CQC, and state regulator, the owner and design engineer utilized additional soil testing and geotechnical analyses to develop a solution for categorizing the complex soil stratigraphy and modified the embankment fill specification acceptance criteria. Additionally, this was completed while minimizing impacts to the project schedule while mitigating dam safety concerns.
