Due to low first cycle coulombic efficiency, pre-lithiation is accepted as a necessary enabling technology for high energy anodes such as Si/C composite materials. However, development of a commercially scalable process has been a major barrier in bringing this technique to the market. There are many different ways of applying metallic lithium to the anode. Livent has recently developed a dynamically stable suspension of lithium that, when combined with commercially available equipment, allows the uniform printing or coating of the formulation on any pre-fabricated electrode, current collector and other material, for example polymer or ceramic electrolyte. By controlling the lithium loading, the formulation can also be used to produce Printable Lithium-derived thin metallic lithium foil with thickness well below 30?m and with the width being limited only by the substrate used.
