Lowering Formation and Grading Costs with Impedance Spectroscopy

Lengthy formation and grading processes in Li-ion cell manufacturing cause significant time bottlenecks, resulting in large capital and operating expenses that increase cell cost. Compared to traditional basic measurements available in manufacturing today (e.g., capacity, open-circuit voltage, internal resistance), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy offers deeper insight into the underlying physical processes that influence battery quality. Hive Battery Labs develops formation and grading equipment and diagnostics that leverage in-operando impedance spectroscopy through the formation process to determine cell grade days earlier in manufacturing. Here we present proof-of-concept findings on the predictive power of impedance spectroscopy.
