Environmental Monitoring of 58 Human Pharmaceuticals in Japanese River Water by LC/MS/MS

We have developed a simultaneous analysis method of the 58 pharmaceuticals in water samples by liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Then, we have conducted environmental monitoring of human pharmaceuticals in Japanese River Water. The sample preparation method, LC/MS/MS analytical conditions were developed and optimized in the present study. The validity of analytical method was evaluated based on the results of the recovery test of each chemical added to purified water at two concentrations (10 and 100 ng/L). We have collected 181 river water samples during January 2018 to March 2019, then analyzed by the method. The detection limits of the 45 pharmaceuticals were lower than 1 ng/L, which were satisfactory for the environmental monitoring. Satisfactory recoveries (70 to 130%) and repeatability (< 30%) were obtained in both concentrations for almost 40 pharmaceuticals. As a result of the environmental monitoring, we have detected 48 pharmaceuticals in 181 river water samples. Crotamiton and Deet were detected in the all river water samples. The detected concentration ranged up to 15500 ng/L (Azithromycin was the highest).
