A new method for improving the radiation characteristics of antipodal Vivaldi antennas is presented. By partially cutting out the dielectric substrate of the conventional antipodal Vivaldi antenna into a special shape, the radiation from the surface wave can be suppressed, resulting in the improvement of the radiation properties without enlarging antenna size. Compared with the conventional antipodal Vivaldi antenna with the same size and the same operating bandwidth from 0.8 to 10.0 GHz, the side lobe level of the proposed antenna is gradually reduced with frequency, and the gain is greatly increased in 3.0-10.0 GHz with the maximum enhancement of 8.5 dB.
