In several metal cutting operations, it is imperative that the cutting tool is to be maintained at a desired operating temperature to improve the tool life. In this study, two possible methods are proposed for the cooling of a single point cutting tool (SPC). In the first method, cooling of a cutting tool is accomplished by the direct impingement of liquid nitrogen droplets on to the tool. In the second method, internal transpiration is used to cool the cutting tool by employing a mixer of liquid nitrogen coolant and air. From the results of the present investigation, both the methods give the same cooling rate. The internal transpiration cooling can be further improved by increasing the effective surface area of the cutting tool and also by using a smaller droplet diameter of liquid nitrogen.
