Visualization of Direction of Principal Strain by a Mechanical Device

摘要

The measurement of strain is often carried out to investigate the inherent performance of structure under the loadings. In order to know the strains in multi-directions, especially the principal strains at a point, it needs to measure the strains at least in three directions simultaneously. In this paper, a simple device is proposed to visualize the direction of principal strain in a domain of structure in real-time. The mechanism and key structure of the device is introduced. The main factors which influence the sensitivity and accuracy of the visualization are analyzed. The fundamental experiments were conducted to verify the validity of the method. It is found that the device can work well to visualize the direction of principal strain.
