A study was recently conducted that focused on the autonomous functions that would be required for a human spacecraft to be operated without a crew on board for an extended duration in deep space. Though a Martian design reference mission was chosen, the results of this study are more broadly applicable. This paper summarizes key results from the study, including a definition of dormancy, technology gaps, and recommendations on the architecture and design for future exploration spacecraft that are expected to have untended periods.
